Michael Cera is stepping out of his awkward yet beloved role as George Michael on Arrested Development , starring in the upcoming indie film Crystal Fairy , a film about a young man on a mission to find a hallucinogen.
Cera’s character Jamie spends the film traveling South American in search of mescaline, a drug found inside San Pedro cactus. Gaby Hoffman, the Crystal Fairy, joins Cera on his journey, experimenting with drugs along the way.
"Yeah, she [Hoffman] lost her shit," Sebastián Silva, director of Crystal Fairy , dished of the on-set use of mescaline during shooting. "It was real mescaline."
"We drank the San Pedro, yeah," Cera confirmed to The Huffington Post . "We do it on-camera. When we drink it in the movie, it was the prop that we used. It was actual drugs."
In an interview with Uinterview , Silva expanded on his use of drugs in the past, and his recommendations for those who are looking for stuff to try.
"I highly recommend kids to take drugs," the director said, saying that substances are much easier for youth to grasp than religion, for example. "But I'm not talking about cocaine or crystal meth. You know, what I'm talking about is Aldous Huxley kind of stuff."
Silva clarified his comments by saying that “spiritual drugs” produce real experiences for users that are strikingly different from what could be gained from organized religion. The director of the anticipated indie flick says he doesn’t think that mescaline should be “put it in the same bag as crack."
