Katherine Jackson finally took the stand Friday in her wrongful death lawsuit trial against AEG in which she claims the concert promoter is responsible for her son Michael Jackson’s death in 2009.
Katherine, 83, called the trial the “most difficult” part of her life, since troubling details about the King of Pop’s final days have been made public during the trial.
“The most difficult thing is to sit here in this court and listen to all the bad things they've said about my son,” she said in a very soft voice, notes the New York Daily News. “None of the things are the truth.”
She said that she didn’t like that Michael was “not here to speak for himself,” adding “I want to know what really happened to my son.”
Katherine spent some part of her testimony recalling Michael’s early life, growing up in Gary, Indiana and offering some light moments. “He'd be down there dancing, sucking his bottle to the squeaky old washer,” she said while recalling a moment when a young Michael danced to the sound of a washing machine.
But the case is much more serious, as Katherine looks to get nearly a $1 billion in damages from AEG. She claims that they were negligent by hiring Dr. Conrad Murray as Michael’s doctor. Murray is still serving a four-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter in Michael’s death.
The $1 billion number comes from accountant Arthur Erk, who testified earlier this week that the “Thriller” singer could have made over $1 billion if he continued to perform until he turned 65 and retired.
According to The Associated Press, AEG later brought in documents that did confirm they were projecting a worldwide tour for Jackson, but that they only believed it would make $132 million for 186 shows. That’s much less than Erk’s $835 million estimate for a projected 260-show tour.
Of course, Michael never officially signed on to do any more than 50 This Is It shows in London.
Meanwhile, TMZ obtained video of Katherine’s deposition. In it, she says she was surprised by the This Is It announcement since “he was always making a joke about he don't want to be doing the moonwalk on stage when he's 50 years.”
