Canadian actor Ryan Gosling has taken a public stand to protect the rights of farm animals.
Gosling has recently partnered with the Farm Sanctuary and Humane Society to help achieve more humane living conditions for Canada’s farm pigs, according to E Online.
“Pigs, specifically, outperform even chimpanzees on some tests of cognitive prowess. So of course these animals deserve our care and attention,” Gosling wrote in the op-ed, “A tiny cage is not a life,” he authored for .
Gosling specially calls for the removal of “gestation crates,” which mother pigs are kept in while pregnant. These cages are so small, he says, that the pigs are unable to even turn around, which deteriorates their muscles and bones and disallows them the social and cognitive stimulation that is necessary for their mental health.
The 32-year-old actor applauds the steps the National Farm Animal Care Council has taken to help fix this issue, but he urges them to close the loophole which still allows pigs to be trapped for weeks at a time. Gosling writes that this is a cruelty he would never put his own beloved dog, George, though, and it should not be endured by pigs either.
