Now that the Sharknado has decimated Los Angeles, SyFy and The Asylum is bringing its shark-filled tornado to New York City. That’s the plot for Sharknado 2 and fan will get to name the new movie.
SyFy is taking full advantage of the social media frenzy the original Sharknado caused last week by launching a Twitter contest to name the sequel. SyFy’s original movie Twitter page has already started retweeting fan titles like Time Square Shark Scare and Chew York, Chew York.
The Asylum, the B-movie studio that has produced many of SyFy’s cheesy movies, will produce Sharknado 2 as well.
“Every once in awhile, there is a perfect storm – on television. The fans are clamoring for a sequel. Or perhaps it will be a prequel,” Thomas Vitale, SyFy’s executive vice president of programming and original movies, said in a statement, notes The Wrap. “What we can guarantee is that Sharknado 2 will be lots of fun. We’ll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn’t want our fans to worry they wouldn’t get their fill of more shark fin, I mean, fun next year.”
If you can’t wait a whole year for more shark mayhem, SyFy is airing Ghost Shark on Aug. 22.
The first airing of Sharknado drew 1.369 million viewers last Sunday night, but was a much bigger hit on the Twitterverse. According to THR, analytics firm Fizzology said that the movie had over 5,000 tweets a minute and there were over 604,000 tweets about Sharknado in total.
