SyFy may be best known for the cheesy B-movies it has been airing lately, but the network is still trying to get attention with ambitious series. This week, it has been reported that the network is working on adaptations of 12 Monkeys and Wizard of Oz.
The 12 Monkeys series is close to getting the greenlight, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Monday. It will be based on Terry Gilliam’s acclaimed 1995 sci-fi film, which starred Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt in a post-apocalyptic world. Pitt earned his first Oscar nomination for his supporting performance.
Atlas Entertainment’s Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle pitched the series to start with a 90-minute pilot and then going straight-to-series. Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett, who both worked on Terra Nova, will write the pilot.
Deadline also reported Monday that Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter director Timur Bekmambetov is working on a Wizard of Oz inspired miniseries called Warriors of Oz, which will be set in a post-apocalyptic Oz. Heartless, Brainless, and Coward will work with a present-day Earth warrior to save Oz from the evil Wizard.
According to EW, these projects might be confirmed by SyFy during the Television Critics Association tour in LA, which starts today.
