This week's new trailer is for the upcoming remake of Chan-wook Park's excellent and controversial 2003 film, Oldboy. The new American version is being directed by Spike Lee and starring Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Elizabeth Olsen (Silent House), Sharlto Copely (District 9) and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers).
In the original film, the film's main character was kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years, then released only to be told that he has five days to find his captor. What unfolds is a mystery of why the lead was kidnapped and why his captor is putting him through all this 15 years later.
In the remake, Josh Brolin takes over the lead role as an advertising executive who is held captive. Elizabeth Olsen plays the young girl who helps him on his quest to unravel the mystery of why he was imprisoned and Sharlto Copely plays the man pulling the strings behind the whole thing.
The trailer below (a red band trailer) does make it seem like Spike Lee is sticking to the story of the original film, as well as the grittiness and violent nature of the story. Over the course of the trailer, we jump through time with Joe (Brolin) as he is imprisoned, then when he is inexplicably released, he goes on a violent rampage to find out what's going on. Fans of the original will be glad to see that the infamous hammer is making a return appearance, and it seems like it's going to be put to a lot of use.
Oldboy is set to be released on October 25.
