A classic HBO program airing from 1998 to 2004, Sex and the City is about four best friends in their thirties and forties living in glamorous New York City. Despite their busy lives, the stylish friends often get together to drink Cosmopolitans, wear fabulous clothes, and psychoanalyze the male species. Though they are often let down by the men in their lives, they have each other to lean on and found soul mates in one another.

Based off the book by Candace Bushnell, Sex and the City’s epicenter is with narrator and quirky yet tasteful fashionista, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker). Carrie narrates the series through the columns she writers for the New York Star, often touching on the behaviors of men and feminine empowerment. Carrie is entangled with three men throughout the series, Mr. Big, Aidan, and Aleksandr, but she ultimately ends up with the love of her life, Mr. Big.

Carrie’s friends Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte (Kristen Davis), and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) are each unique in their own way. Samantha works in PR and is known to be the most sexually confident and open, as she often engages in risqué sexual behaviors and never grows attached. Charlotte is an art curator and a loving mother – she is known to be the caretaker and most optimistic of the group, often choosing her mates for marriage. Miranda is the type-A career oriented lawyer who tends to be the voice of reason in the group.

Sex and the City was seen as a groundbreaking show to explore feminine sexuality as it tackled and openly discussed many female issues such as STD’s, unwanted pregnancies, one-night-stands, and the different levels of romantic relationships. With 54 Emmy nominations, 24 Golden Globe nominations, and 11 Screen Actors Guild nominations, Sex and the City is considered a classic TV show because the issues and topics never get old and pertain to most women.

These four sexy ladies took New York City by storm and paved the way for modern shows to step outside people’s comfort zones.
