Community star Donald Glover may be leading the show this season to focus on his music career, but that doesn’t mean he’s leaving television completely behind. Glover, who uses the stage name childish Gambino when performing, has reportedly signed on to create a music-themed comedy for FX.
Deadline reports that Glover has agreed to write, executive producer and star in the comedy, which is currently being titled Atlanta, after the city where glover grew up. The city’s music scene will serve as the show’s backdrop.
Last month, it was reported that Glover would be minimizing his Community role to just five of 13 episodes for season five. In the series, Glover plays Troy Barnes, a high school quarterback who ruined his career after getting injured and wound up at Greendale Community College. As the show developed, he became best friends with Danny Pudi’s Abed Nadir character.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Glover isn’t the only NBC star who will be working with FX. Former 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan has a comedy pilot in the works there. Glover was a writer for 30 Rock before joining Community.
Glover chose to work with FX because the network is open to working around his touring schedule, notes Deadline.
