Are you ready for more It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia? Because the cast certainly is. At the show’s Television Critics Association Press Tour panel, Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day said that the show can definitely last past season 10.
It’s Always Sunny’s ninth season is set to premiere in September as part of the launch of Fox’s comedy-centric cable network FXX and has already been picked up for 10th season for 2014. But in a Rolling Stone story, Howerton was quoted as saying that season 10 would be the last.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the three stars and executive producers said that a season 11 is definitely not impossible.
“I still feel like we're doing our best work,” McElhenney said. “Yes, we're nine years into it, but we only do 10 episodes a season which allows us to be fresh.”
The three were joined by their co-stars, Danny DeVitto and Kaitlin Olson. They agreed that because the show’s seasons have been cut to 10 episodes and have a short production schedule, it doesn’t hurt their ability to do other projects.
“I think at only 10 episodes a season, you really don't run the risk of burning out,” Day noted.
Entertainment Weekly notes that they discussed some of the new plots they’ve been cooking up, including an entire episode making fun of the fact that the show has never been won an Emmy. In “The Gang Desperately Tries to Win an Award,” they try to make Paddy’s Pub a bar that can win an award, but it doesn’t go as planned.
“I didn’t even realize the nominations came out until a couple days later,” Olson said. “I was like, ‘oh, it’s a shame again this year.’”
Howerton added, “Gary Oldman hasn’t won an Academy Award...We’re the Gary Oldman of shows.”
