Wentworth Miller came out as gay after receiving an invitation to visit Russia.
Miller was invited to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, TMZ reports. He responded by sending a letter to the director of the film festival denying the invitation, because “as a gay man, I must decline.”
He also said in the letter, “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.”
GLAAD also sent out a statement supporting Miller, according to Queerty. “Wentworth’s bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone.”
The 41-year-old does mention that “if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.”
These comments come after Russia passed anti-gay laws back in June, all as the country prepares for the upcoming Olympic Games. Reuters reports that Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko spoke out over how the banning the promotion of homosexuality in Russia is an “invented problem” by Western media.
Wentworth Miller is best known for his role on Prison Break. He also wrote the screenplay for Stoker, which came out earlier this year, Queerty notes.
