SyFy and producers The Asylum have found the perfect title for their Sharknado sequel. It was picked out from a Twitter contest and so perfectly described the new movie that they couldn’t resist. Sharknado 2 has earned the title The Second One.
“Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name Sharknado 2,” Thomas Vitale, executive vp of programming at Syfy, said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “This response is another reminder of how Sharknado has become a pop culture phenomenon. We want to thank all our viewers for their wonderful contributions to keeping up the shark-mentum.”
The network claims that there were over 5,000 submissions from fans on Twitter.
SyFy confirmed the inevitable sequel to Sharknado on July 17. The original cheesy movie featured a shark-filled tornado attack Los Angeles, with sharks coming out of the sewers and swimming the streets of the City of Angeles. So, naturally, the sequel will have a Sharknado attack the East Coast, taking aim at New York City.
The sequel was also the source of controversy last week, when it was reported that American Pie’s Tara Reid would not be asked back for the sequel. However, she denied that, tweeting that she hadn’t even seen a script yet.
Sharknado’s original airing drew over 1.3 million viewers and was screened at Regal Cinemas locations Friday.
Sharknado: The Second One will air next summer.
