If you’re doing a movie about drinking and it’s called Drinking Buddies, you should probably expect some real drinking going on during filming. But Anna Kendrick didn’t, so she was surprised to discover that she was drinking real beer during a take.

The Pitch Perfect actress spoke with Vulture about working on the film and was asked if drinking real beer affected her performance.

“During a scene at the bar, they gave me fake beer, but then during a scene where I'm playing cards with [co-star Jake Johnson], they gave me real beer, and I didn't realize it!” she explained. “And so every time I lost, I was pounding beer, and I didn't realize it was real until halfway through the take. I was like, I'm super drunk right now! And so as soon as the take was over, I had to announce to everybody that I was drunk at work. I was horrified by the idea that I was going to be the next troublesome star who got drunk and started flipping over tables or whatever. I just tried to sit quietly until I sobered up.”

Kendrick added that it was her first time getting drunk on the job and called it “very, very bizarre.” She said it was “uncomfortable,” but “For some of the movie, it was fine, and it worked in the scene, and so it was helpful for them. But I mostly found it really unnerving.”

According to The Huffington Post, Johnson said in an interview with The Daily Beast that Kendrick “is one of the bigger lightweights I've ever been around.” The New Girl star added, “She chugged a real beer thinking it was nonalcoholic, and got drunk instantly.”

Kendrick covered other topics in the interview, including the stunning success of “Cups,” which was bewildering to her. “I don't even know what to say about it,” she said. “The weirdest thing to me is that it's outpositioned artists who are out there promoting their singles, as they should be — they're musicians!”

Drinking Buddies opens in limited theaters this weekend and will be available on Video On Demand.
