The American singer-songwriter and actress is celebrating the big 2-1 today. Demi Lovato started out her career as a child star on Barney and Friends. She gained fame when she stared on Disney’s Camp Rock with the Jonas Brothers. She later got a record deal and certified gold with her first studio album Don’t Forget. Demi is also the star of her own TV show on Disney Channel called Sonny with a Chance. She has released two other very successful albums since then which have also reached the Billboard charts. She recently signed up as a judge for the second time on X-Factor.

Lovato has come a long way after revealing to the public that she has been suffering from depression, eating disorders, and self-harm. It was a result of being terribly bullied in school, but the transition to stardom didn’t make it any easier when she was criticized under the public eye. After she entered herself into rehab, she has been a spokesperson for anti-bullying and depression. In 2012, MTV aired a documentary special, Stay Strong, about her time in rehab and her recovery. It has been reported that Demi has been residing in a sober living facility in Los Angeles for more than a year. She feels it’s the best way to avoid returning to her addictions and eating disorder.

Earlier this year, Lovato’s father passed away from his battle with cancer. According to CNN, the star was never really close with her biological father and revealed he had mental illness. She announced that she would be setting up a scholarship in her dad's honor to help one person at a time to pay for mental illness treatment.

In an interview with Cambio, Demi revealed how she would be celebrating her 21st birthday saying, “Birthdays are all about celebrating life. The last thing I think anyone should be doing on their birthday is poisoning themself." She definitely won’t be buying any drinks to celebrate her 21st. She went on to share,
”I'm just going to do a bunch of charity stuff. I feel like the best way to celebrate anyone's birthday is just giving back and helping others.” Most of the charity work might be in Africa because she recently tweeted: "Am I seriously in AFRICA right now?!!?!??!?!”

It was also revealed yesterday that the star will be heading to Glee this season. We hope she has an amazing birthday and we thank her for all the charity work she’s doing to celebrate her birthday and has done thus far!
