Drinking Buddies is a film about two friends that work at a brewery. Their friendship is always on the border of crossing the line of a platonic relationship, but timing has never been right. Directed by Joe Swanberg and starring New Girl's Jake Johnson and Olivia Wilde, the film features all improvised dialogue.
Anna Kendrick of Pitch Perfect and Ron Livingston from Sex and the City both play the significant others of Luke (Johnson) and Kate (Wildes) at the start of the film. Olivia Wilde’s fiancé, Jason Sudekis also has a cameo role in the movie. All of the characters are drinking in nearly every scene and sexual tension is flying between the characters as well. Over the course of the film, audiences will see Kate and Luke grow slowly envious over the other's significant other.
Improvisation is a difficult task especially when you are using actors who have been trained and working in an atmosphere where a script is the key ingredient to the master piece, but the use of improv allows the performances by each actor to be raw and natural.
Swanberg is known for his other work such as, V/H/S and LOL. In addition, he has a number of projects that should be released in the next year. His film was made in a month with a forty person crew. The film doesn’t end in a typical fashion and that is why the movie works. The movie is humorous throughout, but it follows a new path for a romantic comedy. Drinking Buddies premiered at South by Southwest in 2013. The movie has an early release on iTunes now.
