At last night’s Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus caught everyone’s attention by “twerking,” a dance move that can only be explained as leaning over and moving her butt rapidly.

Her outfit was outlandish and she, in general, seemed to be extreme. Some articles state that she didn’t look good, or that she's having a mental breakdown. People are crying for her to calm down or go to rehab.

I say, Miley should continue to do whatever she wants. I’m Team Miley. I’m not a Miley Cyrus fan - I am just a person who doesn’t like the way that she is being treated by the media. She’s not just a pop star, she’s a person too.

Yes, drugs are bad. I’m not saying that drugs are acceptable and I’m not defending her use of drugs. I’m going to make that clear, I do not believe that it is acceptable to use drugs or promote drugs. However, I’m not Miley and I don’t get to choose what she does and doesn’t do.

In "We Can’t Stop," Miley’s most recent single, she sings about drugs. It would be easy to pick apart the lyrics and depict Miley as a drug-using pop star that doesn’t care about anything but drugs. The line, “We like to party/dancing with molly/doing whatever we want” is easily pulled out. Look, Miley admits to using drugs in her own song!

However, some of the lyrics could also show that Miley is a pop star who cares about everyone. There is a line that states: “Remember only God can judge us/forget the haters/cause somebody loves ya.” Either way, you could pull something out of context and label someone as good or bad.

If we’re going to judge pop stars for talking about drug use in songs, we can’t stop at Miley. There’s Justin Timberlake (So high/I’m on the ceiling baby, “Pusher Love Girl”). Not to mention a multiple number of Jay Z's songs that have to do with his drug dealing past. Miley isn’t the first and she won’t be the last.

The thing that people seem to forget is that, the lyrics that they are pulling out, are from a song. Songs are art. They aren't meant to be broken down. They're meant to entertain. Beyond that, we forget Miley is 21. Who wants to be judged by something they do when they’re 21? No one.

To the critics who say that Miley isn’t a role model, I can agree. But why does she need to be? Role models should be parents and others in the community. If children are looking up to a pop star, there is something wrong with society.

Miley Cyrus isn’t Hannah Montana anymore. She is transforming and that is what you should do when you’re younger. It would be different if Miley beat her significant other, got DUIs or went to rehab or even if she peed in a mop bucket.

Miley has never been arrested. She is engaged to the same man that she has been with for a long period of time. She has a solid career and a fan base that supports her. What is she truly guilty of? Cutting her hair? Dancing? Singing a song? It is nothing worthy of a crowd with pitchforks demanding her head.

Miley is just a girl trying to sing and we should all stop judging her and let her be herself. Aren't there bigger problems than twerking?
