Singer John Mellencamp’s two sons are facing felony battery charges after they allegedly beat a man on his own porch in July in Bloomington, Indiana. The victim was left with facial fractures and required stitches for cuts.
According to the Herald Times, Speck Mellencamp, 18, and Hud Mellencamp, 19, are being charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury. A judge approved the charges on Thursday. Monroe County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Miller told the paper that they are arranging for the two to turn themselves in.
Another man, Ty Smith, 19, has also been charged with felony battery, since he took part in the fight. He also has some famous connections as the son of Indiana University baseball coach Tracy Smith.
The Associated Press reports that the victim was identified as Alexander Bucy, 19.
Bloomington Police Department Officer Lucas Fosnaugh’s report from the July 29 incident shows that at the time, no one wanted to press charges. The Mellencamp brothers walked up to the man, who asked what they wanted. Speck then allegedly hit the man in the face.
“He began being punched, kicked and stomped by Speck Mellencamp and the other two males. They have been identified as Hud Mellencamp and Ty Smith,” the affidavit reads.
TMZ reports that Speck had a different version of events, saying that he was breaking up a fight between two women. While he was trying to do this, another man pushed him and it’s not clear if the man he was referring to is the victim of the battery.
The Mellencamp brothers’ parents are the “Pink Houses” singer and his third wife, Elaine Irwin. The two were married for 19 years and divorced in 2011.
