Jon Stewart is coming back to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show next week after taking the summer off to work on his first film as a director.
The network confirmed that Stewart will be back on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 11:00 p.m. The acclaimed comedian’s lead ins for the night will be the new season of Tosh.0 at 10 p.m. and the second season premiere of the animated comedy Brickleberry at 10:30 p.m.
While Stewart was gone, John Oliver stepped in and earned praise for his handling of the show. The British comedian opened every single episode with a new excuse for Stewart’s absence that ranged from hilarious to bizarre. Stewart did check in on the show a couple of times to make sure Oliver didn’t destroy it.
Stewart took a leave of absence to film Rosewater in the Middle East. The film is about Maziar Bahari, a BBC journalist who was sent to Iran to cover the 2009 elections there and was arrested. He spent 118 days in prison and recounted the ordeal in the 2011 book Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival. Scott Rudin Productions, Odd Lot Entertainment and Stewart’s Busboy Productions produced the film.
