Mariah Carey is revealing a traumatic experience she went through, being spit on by a fellow student as a child while on a school bus.

The Grammy-winning singer, 43, plays a field slave in the upcoming Lee Daniels’ The Butler, and while promoting the film, she got candid about her own life.

She talked about a scene in the film in which a white woman spit on a black woman for asking to be served at a counter reserved only for white people, and she said "That actually happened to me.”

"I know people would be in shock and not really want to believe or accept that, but it did,” Yahoo reports. “That right there, that was almost the deepest thing to me in the movie because I know what she went through — and it happened to be a bus as well. It was a school bus."

When asked by her co-star, Oprah Winfrey, "Where somebody spit on you?" Carey responded, “Yeah. In the face and in the same way."

USA Today reports Carey grew up in Long Island, New York and she’s biracial – her mother being Irish American and her father African American and Venezuelan.
