NBC’s The Sound of Music special has found its Capt. Von Trapp. True Blood star Stephen Moyer will take the role of Christopher Plummer played in the 1965 film.

While Moyer is best known for starring in the HBO vampire series, he does have plenty of experience in theater and singing, notes TheWrap. He recently starred in a Hollywood Bowl production of Chicago as Billy Flynn and is a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He’s also been a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre of Wales and the Oxford Stage Company.

The three-hour live version of The Sound of Music was announced back in June 2012. In December, country star Carrie Underwood snagged the lead role as Maria, the part played by Julie Andrews.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who produced Smash and this year’s Oscars, are producing the special with Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford as the directors.

The Sound of Music was written by Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II and premiered on Broadway in 1959, winning the Tony for Best Musical. In 1965, Robert Wise directed the film version, which won five Oscars, including Best Picture.

Deadline reports that the special is scheduled for Dec. 5.
