Paul Giamatti will star in an FX drama pilot titled Hoke. It is based on a series of novels by Charles Willeford.
According to Deadline, Hoke will be based on Willeford’s Sideswipe, New Hope For The Dead and The Way We Die Now. Scott Frank is writing and directing the pilot. If FX orders the show to go to series, Frank will also act as showrunner.
TheWrap notes that Giamatti will play the title character Hoke Moseley, a detective in 1980’s Miami who might just be insane. It’s billed as a dark comedy/drama.
FX president of original programming Eric Schrier compared Willeford’s writing to the late Elmore Leonard. “Scott Frank delivered a magnificent script and we are honored that Paul Giamatti will bring Hoke to life,” Schrier added in a statement.
Frank actually earned an Oscar nomination for adapting Leonard’s Out of Sight and a Golden Globe nod for Get Shorty. His most recent work is A Walk Among The Tombstones, which stars Liam Neeson.
Hoke is one of several drama pilots in the works at FX, joining Tyrant and The Strain
