Percy Jackson &the Olympians: Sea of Monsters used too many computer animation scenes, sometimes the actors seemed as if they were trying too hard and the movie had plot points that didn’t match the book that it was based on. That being said, I had a great time and was not disappointed.
Sea of Monsters was the sequel to 2010’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. While it has been three years since the first movie, the film made sure to remind the viewers each character’s story and they touched on what had happened in Lightning Thief, without bulking down the story of the movie.
Sea of Monsters follows the story of Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), son of Poseidon and a human, as he continues to train at Camp Half-blood. Annabeth Chase (Alexandra Daddario), daughter of Helena and a human, is along for the ride as is satyr (half man, half goat) Grover Underwood (Brandon T. Jackson)
In the film, Percy is disappointed in the fact that he feels second best to Clarisse LaRue (Leven Rambin) and that he feels that his father has forgotten about him. Then, to Percy’s surprise, his father sends him Tyson (Douglas Smith, who is adorable) his Cyclops-brother.
It is then revealed that Percy is the subject of a prophecy that he will make a decision that will either lead to the destruction or salvation of civilization. So let’s just say that Percy had a lot on his plate.
Rambin is cleverly evil in this film. Rambin was recently in The Hunger Games and it is clear that she comes to any role up for anything.. She used her girl power for evil! It wasn’t that she was doing anything evil, she was just really mean to Percy.
Lerman was impressive throughout the movie as well but it seemed that Daddario was just reading her lines. It wasn’t that she ruined the movie, she just seemed as if she was overwhelmed. Jackson had that same problem.
Half-Blood sends campers to get the Golden Fleece (which can heal anything.) It sends Clarisse, Percy, Annabeth and Grover on an adventure that include fighting Luke (Jake Abel), the assumed-dead villain from Lightning Thief.
This movie did overuse computer animation to the point that, on some parts, I rolled my eyes. However, the kids next to me hardly noticed that anything was fake. It didn’t seem to matter either because you get so involved in the plot that the background and monster begin to seem real.
Sea of Monsters did well with following the book. I have read it and there were only one or two parts that they skipped or added. It was a much better adaption than Lightning Thief.
Also, skip the 3D. There isn’t a real difference between the two.
Sea of Monsters was an adventure. Even though parts of the adventure were lame, I still enjoyed the journey with Percy. I only hope that they finish the Percy Jackson series.
