Robin Thicke is suing Marvin Gaye’s family in order to protect his number one hit “Blurred Lines.”

Hollywood Reporter broke the story, reporting that Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams and Clifford Harris Jr. filed a lawsuit late Thursday (August 15th) against Marvin Gaye’s family as well as Bridgeport Music. The reasoning behind this is that Thicke had been receiving complaints that “Blurred Lines” sounded all too similar to “Got to Give It Up” by Gaye as well as some of Funkadelic’s music which is owned by Bridgeport Music says The Huffington Post.

The lawsuit is pursuing the idea that the Gaye family is trying to claim ownership of an entire genre rather than a single song. The lawsuit will make clear that Thicke and his partners created an original song without taking ideas from anyone else. While it has been reported that “Blurred Lines” might have been influenced by “Got to Give It Up,” the lawsuit addresses that “being reminiscent of a 'sound' is not copyright infringement. The intent in producing 'Blurred Lines' was to evoke an era."
