Shailene Woodley had begged author John Green for the role of Hazel Lancaster in the film adaptation of his novel The Fault in Our Stars, and Woodley is not messing around with this role.

The story focuses on Hazel, a 16-year-old cancer patient who falls in love with another cancer patient Augustus Waters. E! Network confirmed that the Secret Life of the American Teenager star is cutting off her golden brown locks and donating more than eight inches to Children with Hair Loss.

John Green confirmed Woodley’s decision on his official Tumblr, announcing that this was entirely Woodley’s idea. He goes on to ask his fans and anyone who might come across the blog to spread the word to donate eight inches to Children with Hair Loss.

Woodley also wrote about her decision on her own official Tumblr, explaining her tough decision to cut off her luscious locks.

The Fault in Our Stars movie is set to be released sometime in 2014.
