Shots were fired at a Georgia elementary school in the Atlanta area today. Police have said that they have a suspect in custody. No injuries were reported and the students are all accounted for.
The incident took place at the Ronald McNair Discovery Learning Academy, part of the DeKalb County Schools system. A spokesperson told WXIA that the lone suspect is in custody already. The students are safe and there were no injuries reported.
DeKalb County Acting School Superintendent Michael Thurmond told WXIA that the suspect fired at least one shot and police returned fire. He added that several law enforcement agencies took part in the operation.
WSB TV spotted children running from the school and parents were told to go to a nearby Walmart to meet their children.
According to The Huffington Post, the Ronald McNair Discovery Learning Academy is a charter school with around 870 students. It is located in Decatur.
"We're in the process of reuniting the children with their parents," Mekka Parish, spokeswoman for the DeKalb County Police Department, said, reports the Associated Press. "We're just trying to calm the nerves of parents."
Thurmond said that the suspect is in his mid-20s and didn’t appear to be connected to the school.
