Starz is cancelling another drama. The network said Monday that it is ending Magic City, which starred Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the owner of a Miami hotel in 1959 and his connections to gangsters.
According to Deadline, Friday’s second season finale will act as a series finale. Series creator Mitch Glazer based the plot on his own experiences growing up in Miami. In Magic City, Morgan played Ike Evans, the patriarch of a family running the Miramar Playa Hotel while Fidel Castro took over nearby Cuba. Evans got tangled up with gangster Ben Diamond, played by Danny Huston, just as he hoped to make the hotel respectable.
“We are tremendously proud of the series and everyone involved,” Starz said in a statement, notes Zap2It. “From the writers, to the cast and crew, it has been an incredible collaboration. This was a story born from Mitch Glazer's singular vision of Miami, the Magic City of his childhood, and we are grateful to him for bringing it to life on Starz. The season's story arc will allow us to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the series, and we thank all the fans who checked in to the Miramar Playa.”
Starz produced Magic City and found the budget too great considering its lack of viewers. Even bringing in James Caan and other big names couldn’t attract an audience. The decision to cancel this show follows last fall’s surprising decision to end Boss.
The network does have several new shows on the horizon, including the pirates series Black Sails as well as the second season of Da Vinci’s Demons.
