David O. Russell seems to be on a role recently. In the last few years, he has released critically acclaimed and Academy Award winning movies in The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook. How does one possibly follow those up? The answer: combine the casts of those two films into a crime drama set in the 70s that looks like it will be one of the year's best movies.
Set for release this December, American Hustle tells the story of a con man (Christian Bale, The Dark Knight trilogy) and his partner in crime (Amy Adams, Man of Steel) who are forced to work with an off the walls FBI agent (Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook). Complicating matters for the trio are a New Jersey political operator (Jeremy Renner, The Avengers) who is straddling the line between the con men and the FBI and Bale's character's wife, played by Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games).
The trailer doesn't give much away in terms of the plot, but it does showcase the lavish lifestyle that these characters are living. Set perfectly to Led Zeppelin's "Good Times Bad Times," the trailer shows just that, the good and the bad, as all the characters are shown in both happy states as well as miserable. Much like Russell's other works, this one looks to be filled with plenty of excellent acting, raw emotion and likely some Oscar nominations come the end of the year.
