Doctor Who fans all around the world can finally breathe because The Twelfth Doctor has finally been revealed! On BBC America’s live Doctor Who program, Peter Capaldi was revealed to be the replacement when Matt Smith takes his leave after the 50th anniversary episode.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Steven Moffat, head writer of Doctor Who, seemed especially happy with his choice.

When asked about why he chose Capaldi, he said, "There was only one audition this time," Moffat says, "and it wasn't an audition so much as ... he came round my house and we put him on video to see what he looked like as the Doctor and, gosh, he was terribly good!"

It seemed that Capaldi was not a decision made on the spot though says Spy. He went through Moffat’s mind to replace Tennant at first but it didn’t feel quite right at the time.

Even Smith is excited to have Capaldi on board. According to BBC he left him a prerecorded message saying, “I wish my successor all the best and say good luck and good on you for getting it, because I know he's both a huge fan of the show and a really nice guy.”

Capaldi will begin his debut when Matt Smith says his goodbyes on Dec. 25.
