Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is taking no time off after the acclaimed show ends Sunday night. The writer has a new crime drama, which has already earned a series order from CBS.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will likely air during the 2014-2015 TV season. The show is centered in Battle Creek, Michigan, where two detectives with very different personalities have to team up to try to clean the semi-mean streets of the city.
This project has been in development for over a decade. As The Guardian notes, Gilligan first developed the idea at CBS in 2002. Sony TV and CBS TV are co-producing, with Gilligan interested in directing. The showrunner will be House writer David Shore, who also has a development deal at Sony.
CBS has made a 13-episode commitment to the series, which will be Shore’s first since House ended last year.
Gilligan will also be producing AMC’s Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call, Saul, with writer Peter Gould as showrunner.
Gilligan’s Breaking Bad won Outstanding Drama Series at the Emmys and wraps up its fifth and final season on Sunday. The show stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul.
Casting for Battle Creek has yet to be announced. THR notes that Gilligan is being pursued to direct feature film projects, so it is not clear how committed he can be to Battle Creek and Better Call, Saul moving forward.
