Janet Tamaro, the creator of TNT’s hit series Rizzoli & Isles, will be stepping down from her role as showrunner. She will be leaving after the show’s fourth season wraps.
According to Variety, which first reported the news, Tamaro made the decision herself, opting not to renew her contract. Instead, she’ll stay on as a consulting producer on the crime procedural. Her replacement has not been named.
“I did four seasons that I’m incredibly proud of, and the show is in great shape,” she said in an interview with Variety. “It’s been phenomenal, but I’m at the top of my game creatively and really want to use the juice I have to produce other projects…I do so love writing female characters, and I want to do more!”
Tamaro also confirmed the news to her Twitter followers. “You fab fans of R&I had nothing to do with my decision so be relieved or bummed. Non-exciting truth: jones'ing to create another show,” she wrote. She again thanked fans for their support and promised another female-centric show in the future.
Rizzoli & Isles was renewed for a fifth season last month, but was dealt a serious blow when actor Lee Thompson Young committed suicide. He was just 29-years-old.
The series stars Angie Harmon and Susan Alexander and is set in Boston. It is based on novels by Tess Gerritsen and premiered in 2010.
