Alex Rodriguez's tie-breaking homerun in the seventh inning of the New York Yankees 5-1 win over the San Francisco Giants on Friday night, was a record-setting hit.

Rodriguez’s homerun in the seventh inning was a gram slam, and his 24th career grand slam. He passed Lou Gehrig as major league baseball’s career gram slam leader. The homerun was Rodriguez’s seventh of the season and the 654th of his career, according to ESPN New York. Rodriguez tied Gehrig with 23 slams in June 2012 at Atlanta.

"I'm a huge fan of Lou Gehrig, everything he's done, going back to his college days in New York," Rodriguez said after tying Gehrig, notes ESPN New York. "He's kind of the gold standard for a Yankee. It's a special moment. I'll think about it someday."

Rodriguez commented on his accomplishment after the game.

''It means I'm getting old,'' Rodriguez said, according to theAssociated Press. ''It's hard to think about things like that right now. We're really on a sprint to the end here and every win is huge for us.''

Recently Rodriguez has had to deal with hamstring and calf injuries that limited him to DH duty over the last nine games. In his previous 25 at bats before the grand slam, he had only one hit.

The Yankees win on Friday was their second win in seven games and kept them alive for a playoff spot. The Yankees have pulled to within three of the second AL wild card. The Yankees have eight games left.
