The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced the recipients of the Governor’s Awards. Comedian Steve Martin, actresses Angelina Jolie and Angela Lansbury and Italian costume designer Piero Tosi will be honored.
“The Governors Awards pay tribute to individuals who’ve made indelible contributions in their respective fields,” Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited for this year’s honorees and look forward to bringing their peers and colleagues together to celebrate their extraordinary achievements.”
Lansbury has received three Oscar nominations in her career, all for Best Supporting Actress. Her first came for her very first film, 1944’s Gaslight. She was nominated again for 1945’s The Picture of Dorian Grey and again for the 1964 political thriller The Manchurian Candidate.
Martin’s only Oscar nomination came for the 1977 short The Absent-Minded Waiter, but he’s the star of countless classic comedies, from The Jerk to Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Other key credits include Roxeanne, Shopgirl and Three Amigos.
Tosi’s name might not be familiar to most, but the costume designer has scored five Oscar nominations. He began working with the famed Italian director Luchino Visconti and earned his first Oscar nomination for The Leopard. He was also nominated for Death in Venice, Ludwig, La cage aux follies and La Traviata.
While Jolie might be a little young for an honorary Oscar, she is receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her tireless work around the world. She has an Oscar for her supporting role in Girl, Interrupted, but has continued to make a name for herself as a humanitarian. She has worked with the United Nations for over a decade.
The honorary Oscars will be handed out during a ceremony on Nov. 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center.
