Big Freedia, known from RuPaul’s music video for “Peanut Butter” organized an event in Times Square, NYC on Wednesday that has now set the Guinness World Record for "Most People Twerking Simultaneously."
Charlie Weisman was there to officiate the twerk-fest, watching people of all ages participate in a "Record Breaking Booty Shaking."
The goal was to get hundreds of people to twerk together for two minutes straight, however, there were certain rules they had to follow, which Weisman was there to make sure of.
Fuse notes the seven official rules for twerking are as follows:
Bodies must remain upright, with movement concentrated in hips, those participating can put hands on knees or hips for support, twerking action cannot come from knees. Hips only!, freestyling or additional choreography not permitted, no hands on the ground, feet in the air, twirling, etc, twerking action must be synchronized, can be at own pace, all participants must twerk simultaneously for TWO MINUTES when Big Freedia gives the signal and any performers who do not participate fully for the entire TWO MINUTES will be deducted from the final total.
According to E! Online, the oldest “twerker” was 80 years old and the youngest was 8.
When all was said and done Weisman announced that Big Freedia had accomplished what she had set out to do. "250 participants needed to twerk, simultaneously, using proper technique. Today, I am happy to announce a new Guinness World Record with a total of 358 participants,” he announced.
Big Freedia then tweeted:
Thanks to fuse and nyc and all my fans for helping me set the world record today im very grateful New Orleans representer !
