The 2013 Kennedy Center honorees were announced on Thursday, and Billy Joel and Carlos Santana were among those selected.
The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts selectees are recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through performing arts, CBS News reports.
Those selected for the honors receive a pre-gala reception hosted by President Barack Obama at the White House. Secretary of State John Kerry will also be hosting a celebratory dinner after.
According to USA Today, those chosen are Joel, musician Santana, actress, Shirley MacLaine, opera singer Martina Arroyo and Herbie Hancock.
Joel said in a statement, "I'm truly honored to be named a Kennedy Center honoree along with the other esteemed artists named this year."
"And to have my name added to the illustrious roster of outstanding musicians that have already been so honored is very meaningful to me. But to be chosen for this special award essentially for doing what I love most amazes me more than anything." the singer added.
Frank Sinatra, Oprah Winfrey and Steve Martin are among those previously honored by the Kennedy Center.
The event will be broadcast on Dec. 29 on CBS at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
