Bob Newhart won his first Emmy award for his appearance on The Big Bang Theory.
The actor had been previously nominated seven times and finally won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series on the hit CBS TV show, Entertainment Weekly reports.
He won the award Sunday night at the Primetime Creative Arts Emmys, which is more about the more behind the scenes awards, but includes awards for guest roles.
The Bob Newhart Show actor received a standing ovation as he was presented with the award. The veteran actor commented, "I was totally unprepared for that."
He told press after the show that he simply never won before because "whenever I was nominated, there were better people in the category than me. That's the truth. The best person wins. That's the way it is."
According to USA Today, the 84-year-old actor played a washed up children's entertainer called Professor Proton on Bang Theory. Proton was a childhood icon for Sheldon, who hires him to come to his place after finding out he does personal shows now.
Newhart has been nominated previously for Newhart, ER and The Librarian.
