The Cleveland Browns third-string quarterback Brian Hoyer will be the starter in Sunday’s game against the Vikings while Brandon Weeden is out with a sprained thumb.

On Wednesday, the team announced its decision to start Hoyer over backup quarterback Jason Campbell. While the move comes as a bit of a surprise, coach Rob Chudzinski and general manager Mike Lombardi have actually been high on Hoyer for quite some time, CBS Sports reports.

Following the announcement, the head coach informed media members that the move was his call and gushed about the newly named starter.

"It was absolutely my decision," Chudzinski told the media, before adding that Hoyer "can make every throw that you need and there are no limitations from that standpoint."

Hoyer is a five-year veteran, but has little experience. His only NFL start came last season as a member of the Arizona Cardinals in a Week 17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. In that game, Hoyer completed 19 of 34 passes for 225 yards with one touchdown and one interception, according to Pro-Football-Reference.com.

No timeline has been set for Weeden’s return, but if Hoyer plays well on Sunday Weeden's future with the team might be as uncertain as Campbell’s.
