Sunday’s broadcast of the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards will likely bring rejoice for some and tears for others. Viewers will cheer when their favorites win, and talk about unfairness when they lose. Here are my thoughts and predictions about who will win in the comedy categories on Sunday’s show.
Best Comedy Series
The Nominees: 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Girls, Louie, Modern Family, Veep
Past Winners: Modern Family (2010-2012)
Prediction: Modern Family probably has this one in the bag, as can be seen from the last three years. The series remained strong enough this season that it shouldn’t lose its spot, but if it were to be overturned, it would probably be by the very funny Veep, or by 30 Rock, which could earn some extra votes because it was it’s final season.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
The Nominees: Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Louis C.K. (Louie), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Matt LeBlanc (Episodes), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Past Winners: Jon Cryer (2012), Jim Parsons (2010-2011)
Prediction: Louis C.K. is probably the most deserving of this award, but I predict that it will probably go to the (also very deserving) Jim Parsons or Alec Baldwin.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
The Nominees: Laura Dern (Enlightened), Lena Dunham (Girls), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie), Tina Fey (30 Rock), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)
Past Winners: Julia Louis-Dreyfus (2012), Melissa McCarthy (2011), Edie Falco (2010)
Prediction: Julia Louis-Dreyfus is consistently funny on Veep, and it’s likely that she’ll be the one to take home the trophy, although Poehler and Fey probably both also stand a chance.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
The Nominees: Ty Burrell (Modern Family), Adam Driver (Girls), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family), Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live), Tony Hale (Veep), Ed O’Neill (Modern Family)
Past Winners: Eric Stonestreet (2010, 2012), Ty Burrell (2011)
Prediction: I think that this race mostly comes down to Hale, O’Neill, and Burrell. It’ll likely go to one of the two from Modern Family, though.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
The Nominees: Mayim Bialik (The Big Bang Theory), Julie Bowen (Modern Family), Anna Chlumsky (Veep), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Jane Lynch (Glee), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie)
Past Winners: Julie Bowen (2011-2012), Jane Lynch (2010)
Prediction: Sofia Vergara has yet to win, and if the Emmy voters are still in love with Modern Family, they may give it to her. Other contenders are Jane Krakowski and Mayim Bialik, although Merritt Wever definitely deserves it as well.
