In one of the most anticipated fights in boxing history, Floyd Mayweather Jr. easily boxed his way to victory against Mexican fighter, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in Las Vegas, Saturday night.
Saturday’s game was Alvarez’s first loss in 44 professional fights. Many touted the red-head boxer as one of the first real contenders to finally mar Mayweather’s 45-0 wins to losses record.
The New York Times reports that the Mayweather-Alvarez match sold out within 24 hours. StubHub marked its most expensive tickets at $14,000.
Oscar De La Hoya, a previous contender against Mayweather, said, “I know why it’s caught on so big is because people have hope and people strongly feel that Mayweather is going to get beat [...] that’s why I feel this fight is catching fire.”
Concluding the night, Alvarez admitted, “I didn’t know how to get him. It’s as simple as that. He’s very elusive. He’s a great fighter... I didn’t want to lose. I didn’t want to leave here with a loss. But it happens and it hurts.”
The Washington Journal reports only one ringside judge, C.J. Ross, had Mayweather and Alvarez tied at 114-114. The rest of the judges had Mayweather winning by a comfortable margin of 117-111 and 116-112.
