Jada Pinkett Smith is revealing a well-kept secret about herself – she has overcome addiction. In a Facebook post, the actress opens up about past struggles in her life.
The wife of Will Smith was thanking fans for wishing her a Happy Birthday, and decided to reflect on the lessons she’s learned in her 42 years.
“Yesterday I turned one year older, and I reflected on where I have been and where I am now. What I learned about myself is this, when I was younger I was not a good problem solver, meaning I had a very difficult time with dealing with my problems in life,” she wrote.
“I had many addictions, of several kinds, to deal with my life issues, but today, at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life's inevitable obstacles.”
Daily Mail notes back in 2011 that Pinkett Smith revealed her father had died of an overdose. “‘I’m a drug addict and a criminal, I can’t be your father,” she remembers him telling her when she was just seven years old. Her mother also battled with addiction, being hooked on heroin while Pinkett grew up in Baltimore, Maryland.
She concluded her post by saying, “I have become a good problem solver with those tools, and I am damn proud. Thank you for all the love that was given to me for my birthday this year.”
