John Stewart made his return to The Daily Show on Tuesday night after carrying out a brief hiatus to direct an independent film called Rosewater over the summer.

Back in March, Stewart made the announcement that he would be out for eight weeks to work on his directorial debut, and that he would be leaving hosting duties to John Oliver. Rosewater isbased off of BBC journalist Maziar Bahari's memoir Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity and Survival and he wrote the screenplay.

The Hollywood Reporter reports Rosewater wrapped last month, but Stewart will start to pitch it to buyers at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend.

During his return to his 14-year show, Stewart played a plethora of characters - Sherlock Holmes, Freddie Mercury, Miley Cyrus at the MTV VMAs, a Mel Brooksian Nazi and more, EW reports.

He then both discussed the issue of Syria seriously, as well as not seriously, and interviewed Andrew Harper, head of the UN refugee agency in Jordan.
