Justin Maxwell sent home the first and last four runs of the game in the bottom of the tenth inning with two outs to send the Royals over the Rangers 4-0.
Maxwell sent a fastball sailing over the left field fence and into the bullpen to put the only four runs of the game on the board, keeping the Royals playoff hopes alive. The Royals win also clinched the AL West title for the Oakland A's, since it was the Rangers who lost the game.
The game was scoreless into extras due to fantastic pitching performances from both starters, James Shields and Alexi Ogando.NBC Sports reports that Ogando went seven innings allowing two hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Shields made it through eight innings giving up six hits and a walk while striking out two. Also for the Royals, Greg Holland and Tim Collins pitched a scoreless inning each in relief of Shields.
According to KansasCity.com the Royals entered the game 3 1/2 games out of the wild card spot, and they still have some work ahead of them if they want to play in October. This was their ;art home game as they head out on a seven-game road trip.
