Katy Perry is opening up about suicidal thoughts she had during her divorce with Russell Brand.

According to Perez Hilton, the “Roar” singer revealed details to Billboard magazine about her life after Brand split with her via text message. The pop star’s song “By the Grace of God” from her upcoming album Prism talks about her life during that difficult time.

“That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point. I asked myself, ‘Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?’” she says.

Perry continues to talk about her confessional writing style, saying, “All the songs are real-life moments. I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the real truth about stuff, just listen to the songs.”

Luckily, the Prism pop star has found a new man and is roaring louder than ever. The New York Daily News reports that Perry also spilled details to the magazine about her much happier love life with boyfriend John Mayer.

“He’s literally a genius, as is evident from his songwriting. I always tell him, ‘Darling, you know I’m going to have to give your mind to science after you’ve passed because we’re going to have to understand how all these sparks work,’” she says.

Katy Perry’s third studio album Prism hits stores on October 22nd.
