Lifetime has cancelled its long-running drama Army Wives following a seven-season run.
Lifetime executive vice president and general manager Rob Sharenow praised the show in the network’s statement, noting its timely topics.
“There is no denying how special Army Wives has been to both Lifetime and the television landscape,” Sharenow said, reports TV Guide. “By taking on a very relevant and timely issue, it has brilliantly captured the challenges our military families endure and the bravery they and their loved ones display while serving our country.”
The series focused on the families who lived on a military base. The show’s seventh season lost Kim Delaney and tried to bring in new stars, including Brooke Shields. But it failed to bring in viewers and just 2.26 million viewers watched the premiere and 2.41 million tuned in for the season finale.
Army Wives was based on Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives by Tanya Biank and was an ABC Studios production, notes TheWrap.
Since Army Wives has been a centerpiece of Lifetime’s line-up for so long, the network is planning on doing a two-hour retrospective, which will air next year.
