It’s hard to look at Liza Minnelli today without thinking of Cabaret, the 1972 classic that won her an Oscar for her performance as Sally Bowles. As the actress most identified in that role, Minnelli gave her stamp of approval on Michelle Williams being cast as the new Sally Bowles.

In an interview with E! News, Minnelli said she was excited to see how Williams does in her Broadway debut. She also said that she loves Alan Cumming, who is back again to play the MC after doing so in the 1998 revival.

“Michelle is a wonderful actress and I love Alan Cumming,” she told E!. "I'm excited to see what they will do with the show and am sure it will be great!"

As we previously reported, Williams officially joined the production on Wednesday, months after Emma Stone dropped out.

The revival, produced by the Roundabout Theatre, will bring back many familiar faces to the Kit Kat Klub, including Cumming, director Sam Mendes and choreographer Rob Marshall. It will last 24 weeks, with previews starting on March 21 and opening night scheduled for April 24.

“I'm delighted to be stepping back into the Kit Kat Klub one more time, and to be having the opportunity to re-explore and re-discover this extraordinary musical alongside two equally extraordinary performers,” Mendes said in a statement.

Marshall added, “Michelle Williams is an actress of rare gifts and she will make an astonishing Sally Bowles.”

Williams has been nominated for Oscars for her roles in Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine and My Week With Marilyn.
