The Floyd Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez fight over the weekend set a pay-per-view revenue record and could potentially break another.
Showtimes PPV revenue was nearly $150 million, USA Today reports. The previous record was the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather fight in 2007 with $136 million.
Early distributor reports say the PPV buys are at 2.2 million, but could potentially surpass the 2.48 million record the De La Hoya fight also set.
Fight promoter Richard Schaefer, the chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions said, "My calculator is steaming," Los Angeles Times notes. "While numbers are still coming in, I am confident in saying this will be the highest-grossing pay-per-view of all time, millions more than the record."
In the hugely hyped fight, Mayweather beat 23-year-old Alvarez to improve to 45-0. Alvarez dropped to 42-1-1. The fight in high definition cost PPV buyers about $75, up $25 from the Hoya fight.
Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's advisor, said, "Floyd is ecstatic and this is another example that he's been the most dominant athlete in sports for several years. And he gets paid accordingly."
