New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey will try to rehabilitate his injured right elbow instead of undergoing Tommy John surgery.
On Monday Harvey met with Dr. James Andrews and Harvey will begin a rehab program before starting a throwing program in 1-2 months. Harvey was diagnosed by the Mets doctors with a partial tear of his right ulnar collateral ligament, according to The Sports Xchange. Harvey hopes to avoid needing to have surgery. If surgery is required, then he will likely be sidelined for all of 2014.
Harvey started the All-Star game for the National League this year. His fame has grown since then. He has made television appearances and appeared on magazine covers. With his popularity growing, Harvey has become the face of the Mets along with David Wright, according to the New York Times.
The season for Harvey ended on August 26 , when the Mets announced his injury. He finished the season with a 9-5 record and a 2.27 ERA in 26 games. He was one of the top rookies in baseball at the time of his injury. Harvey was placed on the disabled list on August 27.
The Mets had planned to address Harvey’s prognosis and treatment plan on Tuesday.
