Michelle Williams has been cast in the lead role of Sally Bowles in the Broadway revival of Cabaret.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Blue Valentine star will be playing the role most famously performed by Liza Minnelli.

The 30-year-old actress will be joined by Alan Cumming, The Roundabout Theatre Company said. Williams was cast after Easy A star Emma Stone had to withdraw because of scheduling conflicts. Cumming previously played in Cabaret in 1988.

E! Online notes that the role earned Cumming a Tony award.

Minnelli played the role of Sally Bowles in the 1972 movie adaptation by Bob Fosse and won an Oscar. While Minnelli is most famous for the role, others, including Judi Dench and Lea Thompson, have played Bowles.

The WSJ explains that Cabaret is set in 1931 Berlin in the Kit Kat Klub as the world is drawing ever closer to World War II. The play features songs written by John Kander and Fred Ebb, such as “Willkommen” and “Tomorrow Belongs to Me.”

In addition to Blue Valentine, Williams has been in Brokeback Mountain, Shutter Island and My Week with Marilyn - in which she played the title role.

Cabaret is scheduled to open next year on Broadway on April 24, with previews starting in late March.
