Several people were killed, and more were injured, in a shooting rampage at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday.
The US Navy confirmed on Twitter that three shots were fired this morning. According to The Associated Press, officials believe there is more than one shooter involved, one of whom has died at the Navy Yard. Witnesses described one shooter as opening firing from the fourth-floor down into the first-floor cafeteria, while another gunman fired at them from the third-floor.
Schools in the area have been put on lockdown and departures at the Reagan National Airport were briefly put on hold. Police and federal agents from multiple agencies responded and at least two officers have been shot, although it is not known whether they are among the fatalities, The Washington Post reports.
President Barack Obama has been briefed on the situation and “has directed his team to stay in touch with our federal partners, including the Navy and FBI, as well as the local officials [and] urg[ed] citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site.”
