The NBA is expected to go back to the 2-2-1-1 Finals format, which was used until 1984 and is now held by all other playoff rounds.
The NBA competition committee has voted to recommend the switch to the league's board of directors according to ESPN. Owners' approval is still required in order to make this change, but it is believed that it will pass which will end the current use of the 2-3-2 format.
According to USA Today the 2-3-2 format has been used in the league since 1985, when it was originally changed from the 2-2-1-1-1. The decision was made then that it was not worth it for teams to travel from the east to west coast or vice versa for one game.
"The idea was raised at the competition committee and was well-received and the committee ultimately unanimously voted to recommend the change in format," NBA spokesman Tim Frank said Sunday.
One of the reasons for the suggested change is that the current format is thought to benefit the higher seed. The higher seed gets the last two games at home, which Miami won to take the trophy in the last finals.
Along with that argument, the fact that the lower seed gets game six at home, which increases the likelihood of a series going to game seven. A full seven game series is to the benefit of the business side of the NBA.
The change is likely to be official after the next meeting in October.
