After all the publicity about Netflix getting the attention of Emmys voters, the streaming service only walked away with one win and lost every major category. That was mostly because of the dominance of HBO and AMC, which also largely shut the broadcast networks out of the winner’s circle.
Netflix scored 14 nominations, with the revived Arrested Development and House of Cards earning nominations in the major categories, but they walked away empty handed. Arrested Development’s Jason Bateman lost to The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons. House of Cards lead stars Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright lost to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels and Homeland’s Claire Danes.
The only win for Netflix came for famed director David Fincher, who won for directing the first episode of House of Cards. Fincher wasn’t even there to pick up the award. (He’s working on his next movie, Gone Girl.)
But Netflix shouldn’t fret. House of Cards’ second season is in the works and Orange is the New Black could be a player next year.
Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad - which won outstanding drama series - told reporters that he was surprised that his show won. “I did not see this coming. I thought it was going to be House of Cards,” he said, reports THR.
For now, HBO is celebrating its 27 wins. The network’s Behind The Candelabra won 11 total awards. Its Veep won acting awards for Tony Hale and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Plus Daniels’ win was a shocking upset over Spacey, Jon Hamm and Bryan Cranston. Bobby Cannavale of Boardwalk Empire also won supporting actor in a drama.
AMC had two dramas in contention for top awards - Mad Men and Breaking Bad. While Mad Men had been an Emmy darling (its first four seasons won outstanding drama), stars Hamm, Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks all walked away without awards. Breaking Bad was the big winner, also scoring outstanding supporting actress for Anna Gunn.
