The New York Yankees have received shortstop Brendan Ryan from the Seattle Mariners in a trade for a player to be named later.
Ryan is a great fielder but he is a weak hitter. In 87 games with the Mariners this season, Ryan hit just .192 with three homeruns and 21 RBI’s. He is a career .238 hitter with 18 career homeruns, according toESPN New York . Ryan can also play second base, third base, left field, and right field if the Yankees need him to. The majority of Ryan’s games have been played at the shortstop position.
The Yankees brought Ryan in because Yankees captain Derek Jeter’s health in uncertain and they needed help at shortstop. Yankees manager Joe Giradi said that Jeter is “still in a holding pattern” after being out of the lineup on Tuesday, according toYahoo Sports. Ryan won’t be eligible for the postseason because he was added to the Yankees after August 31.
Jeter has played in only 17 games this season. He is batting .190 with one homerun and seven RBI’s. Jeter has been on the disabled list twice since missing the first 91 games of the year due to injuries.
It seems like the Yankees made a good choice in helping their shortstop situation. Now they have to hope that Ryan can be a better hitter.
